Burnet girls basketball beats Lampasas to split series

The Burnet High School girls basketball team defeated Lampasas 51-38 Jan. 27 to move to 3-3 in District 24-4A play and remain third in the standings.

But Lampasas welcomes district-leader Marble Falls in a game that was postponed Jan. 31 because of weather. If Marble Falls can win at Lampasas, it will give the Lady Badgers a third loss.

“If we can (win) our last two games, we could be tied for second,” Burnet head coach Rick Gates said. “I felt like we had a good outing when we played Marble Falls, and I felt like that propelled us and helped us understand that we’re still a good team and can play with the top teams in the district.”

As for the game against Lampasas, the Lady Dawgs trailed 13-9 after the first quarter but struck back with a 15-1 run toward the end of the first half.

“We’re notorious for getting off to slow starts,” Gates said. “With what was happening in the first quarter, I called a timeout and challenged them. I wanted to make sure we were solid defensively and making sure we were getting quality shots. We went on to finish that quarter OK. In the second quarter, we pulled away and were able to keep a double-digit lead.”

Burnet continued that trend in the third stanza, outscoring the Lady Badgers 15-10 to keep the advantage headed into the final period.

“We felt like we were in control going into the fourth quarter,” Gates said.

Junior center Zaria Solis led Burnet with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

“She did a great job inside,” the coach said. “And we had players who were knocking down 3-pointers. We hit seven 3-pointers. We did a good job offensively.”

Gates noted the Lady Dawgs’ commitment to defense led to the outcome.

“We did a good job on them,” he said. “We put an emphasis on making sure we limited (senior guard Brooke White). Holding teams to under 40 is something we look at.”

As he thought about the way his players competed against Marble Falls and Lampasas the last two games, Gates believes his team is in a good spot.

“We did a good job (against Lampasas),” he said. “I hope it can carry over to the last two district games.”

Burnet welcomes Jarrell, which is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:30 p.m. and the freshmen at 8 p.m.
